looks like a garter snake - they're good at keeping the pest population down!

you'd hate my son's room... he's got a 5 ft black corn snake. It's very affectionate, especially when it wants to give the mice big hugs!

OMG!!! Are Corn snakes dangerous?!? I know Garter's are harmless they've just ALWAYS freaked me out. I can't even go in the yard because I know they're all over the place  Wish I could get over this fear...

no, corn snakes are only dangerous to small rodents - he eats 2-3 live mice a week.

Look at it this way, at least it's a harmless snake. Some friends of mine live in the local hills and have rattle snakes come onto the property on occasion. Even found a couple trying to get into the house. They keep a loaded 45 and a shotgun near the back door just in case one gets too close. They also keep a king snake in the crawl space under the house just in case...

yes, these can be the 'other' wonders of living in California... LOL

Err snakes... I've never seen one out of a zoo, or other then a friends pet. They give me the creeps.

Oddly enough he's scared of them too and not by MY choice. I try to hide my fear and even brought him to the pet store and asked if he would like to go look at the snakes...I got a loud "NOOOO" I smiled to myself and we looked at the puppies...lol

I hope to be able to teach Ryan not to be afraid of them but to also KEEP THEM OUTSIDE. :laughout: It sucks when you can't even go in your backyard because you're so scared of a little non threatening snake! :geez:
