For example, in Deep Purple's Smoke on the water, they mention "Frank Zappa and the Mothers".

Can anyone think of other instances like this?
I'm sure there are a ton of them.

Red Hot Chili Peppers' - Californication references Bowie's album Station to Station as well as Kurt Cobain.

Phish references both David Bowie and UB40 in their song called (duh) David Bowie.

I was gonna say that one too. Funny thing is I never listened to the lyrics well enough to even know what the song was really about. I only found out recently that they were dissing Neil Young.

From what I've read because Neil did that song "southern man"

What was that one a few years ago where the kid sang about beating up Courtney Love and Marylin Manson ...New Radicals? Yeah, that lasted.

They did a failrly popular song called "Eddie Vedder".

Also, Weezer's song "Buddy Holly" can't be overlooked.
