The following is an interview conducted by XBiz (http://www.xbiz.com) for their "Niche Marketing and the Adult Internet in 2007." feature. Our very own CuriousToyBoy fielded their questions in the interview reproduced below. The opinions expressed therein
are his personal opinions and are not necessarily shared or endorsed by LionDollars. Watch for it in an upcoming XBiz Magazine or online.

XBiz:
How important was niche marketing to adult webmasters in 2007? Did we see an increase in adult websites that cater to very specific tastes? Please give some examples of very successful niche-oriented sites and describe the things that make them successful.

CuriousToyBoy:
Emerging markets, niches and micro niches are an ever growing phenomenon and have been for a long time now. Not so long ago many considered gay a niche. How they missed that boat. Smart people and companies are always looking to define and REFINE their market offerings, getting more and more specific, and more and more focussed in what they are providing and to who and how. I cannot see this changing. Identifying a market need or under-serviced or poorly serviced niche, and creating the product that fits the bill, and getting to market where you can find your targeted consumer is becoming more and more not just a science, but also an art.

XBiz:
What were some of the most profitable niches in 2007?

CuriousToyBoy:
Sex dating and escort directories, the REAL ones, have gone through the roof in the last 12 months, and the continued growth in both demand and supply has clearly evidenced just how profitable those niches and the associated micro-niches have become. It is not enough now for people to be pleasured online, they want real time action, or at least the chance of that, as well.

XBiz:
In 2007, was there saturation when it came to particular niches on the adult Internet? What themes or niches were especially prominent in 2007?

CuriousToyBoy: See question 2. above.

XBiz: Is niche marketing a reflection of how competitive the adult Internet has become compared to five or ten years ago? In other words, are some adult webmasters turning to niche marketing as a way to stand out in the crowd?

CuriousToyBoy:
Smart people and companies recognized LONG ago that niches and micro-niches are where it is at. Forget about even 5 years ago, the real players were well and truly already establishing a niche suite of products to complement and enhance their "bundled" options, and that is why there are so many of the same names bandied about today as then. It's called vision and strategic direction.

XBiz:
How popular were BDSM sites in 2007 compared to 2004, 2005 or 2006? What particular areas of BDSM were the most popular?

CuriousToyBoy:
Really nasty stuff has ALWAYS had a following to be envied. The more extreme the more the cream. People join and people stay - because they want to, it's their thing. BDSM being as much of a lifestyle choice as a sexual predilection has always been a driver of this.
But so to is the shock value and general desensitisation of the masses - people push the boundaries and they want to see the envelope bent as far out of shape as possible. The hardest thing with the really extreme in 2007 has been billing the stuff. As "general" porn becomes more and more mainstream, the lines in the sand for the really extreme stuff get shorter and shorter it seems.

XBiz:
How much growth did you see in the alt-porn market in 2007?

CuriousToyBoy:
What I found interesting was the growth in the pseudo alt type market. More and more sites taking a different spin on an old theme and also the ones that "mixed metaphors" with combinations of porn and reality and other things. As the market gets spread thinner and thinner, creativity will always be king. The difference is these days is something new and/or different becomes the "next big thing" for about a week before people get over it.

XBiz:
Is it accurate to say that even though the market for BDSM adult sites is not as large as the market for vanilla adult sites, many
BDSM sites are prospering because the people who are into BDSM are so passionate and enthusiastic about it? Please explain what makes the things that make patrons of BDSM sites attractive customers to have.

CuriousToyBoy:
Like I said, for a large number BDSM is a lifestyle choice, not just a sexual fetish. With a "general" surfer they are involved, whereas a BDSM lifstyler is committed. In much the same as breakfast - the chicken is involved, but the pig is committed. BDSM'ers can be customers for life if you satisfy their lifestyle needs.

XBiz:
How popular were hip-hop-themed adult sites in 2007? Howmuch growth did the adult industry see in that area? Please describe some of
the various types of hip-hop-themed adult sites and how they exemplify niche marketing.

CuriousToyBoy:
Honestly I can't say I have paid much attention, at the end of the day another niche for another time, not what I would really call something with everlasting appeal.

XBiz:
Will niche marketing become even bigger on the adult Internet in the future? Please explain why or why not.

CuriousToyBoy:
Internet consumers become in general more savvy by the year. Not only is the internet becoming even more and more an integral part of a persons daily life, but new users can draw on the experiential knowledge of the prior net generation, and we have now passed into the 2nd and 3rd generation of internet users, and the "accumulated wisdom" that comes with that. What worked before does not necessarily work today and will even less likely work tomorrow. Just becomes the same old marketing problem - know your product, know your market and know how to reach your market.
