LionDollars (http://www.liondollars.com/_ee33dc2ffac072c1038582f2beea01fa/) shares the wisdom yet again ....

Recently Google did a major PageRank update where a lot of sites were downgraded. Many experts believe this PageRank update was Google's response to link selling - sites which sell links lost ground in their PageRank almost without major exception across the board, and many significantly in PR terms.

Google measures all web pages on a scale of importance from 0 to 10, which is shown in a small green pixel bar on browsers carrying the Google Toolbar. PageRank - commonly known as PR - is "supposedly" in part measured by the number of relevant backlinks to your site - the more links, the higher the PR, in theory anyway.

Many will heed this as a firm warning that ranks will go down further if you continue to either sell links or buy links. If Google decides a site is selling links, ALL links on that site then become suspect, and so the dominoes will allegedly fall.

In all this kerfuffle, REMEMBER, just because your PR goes down doesn't mean your keyword rankings or traffic from Google also goes down.

Some of sites went up, some stayed the same, and some took big hits. This "blow" is mainly a psychological one for the day-to-day SEO work of by far the majority of webmasters. Do NOT panic just because of the sudden drop in PageRank.

What remains key is your keyword placement AND YOUR TRAFFIC. So many people get so hung up on PR and Google's games they seem to forget what this game is all about - TRAFFIC.

Remember that if your pages dropped, so would many of your competitors have dropped too.

I call it the "Google Game" for a reason - you don't really know EVER where you stand; you are constantly worried and making adjustments, you are continually analyzing and re-analyzing, worried to death that your "little green line" of PR will drain away.

A lot of so-called "SEO experts" believe PageRank is meaningless because Google is not giving us the true ranking of any site or revealing all the backlinks, which is supposedly one of the major factors in how Google ranks sites. Google PageRank IS important, but not to the detriment of traffic.

Google PageRank is extremely important if you're doing business on the web. The higher PR you have, the better. But it has nothing to do with keyword rankings or first page SERPs.

PageRank is important. PageRank has meaning. Even if it has little bearing on your SERPs rankings or Google traffic, PageRank can greatly influence your success. Don't ignore or dismiss PageRank as a meaningless relic that didn't quite work out as Google had planned for it in the first place - high PageRank will always be valuable. The day Google gives its own site a PageRank of PR1 or PR2 instead of the current PR10 - well that's the day you can dismiss PageRank as truly meaningless.

But I urge you NOT to despair if a few of your sites take hits on their PR. I would MUCH rather have 200 PR0,1 or 2 sites with good page indexing and keyword/phrase strength than 3 PR8 sites.

And that is not just about traffic, that is about risk management and gathering small amounts of traffic from lots of sources.

It does not take long for a pile of twigs to make a lump of wood.
