Austrian woman kept in cellar for 24 years

VIENNA, Austria – Police have found a woman missing since 1984, who told authorities that her father had kept her in a cellar for almost 24 years and that she had given birth to seven children after being repeatedly raped by him.

The 73-year-old father was taken into custody, Franz Polzer, head of the Lower Austrian Bureau of Criminal Affairs, told reporters Sunday.

Authorities found the woman Saturday evening in the town of Amstetten following a tip, Lower Austria police said in a statement.

The 42-year-old woman told police that her father began sexually abusing her when she was 11 and locked her in a room in the cellar on Aug. 28, 1984.

During the 24 years that followed, she said she was continually abused and gave birth to seven children, one of whom died several days later.

Police said in the statement the woman appeared "greatly disturbed" psychologically during questioning. She agreed to talk only after authorities assured her that she would no longer have to have contact with her father and that her children would be taken care of.

DNA tests are expected to determine whether the man is the father of the six surviving children, according to police.

The Austria Press Agency said the three boys and three girls range in age from five and 20. One of the children, a 19-year-old woman, was being hospitalized in very serious condition, according to Austrian broadcaster ORF.

Sunday's developments recalled another case that shocked Austrians in the summer of 2006, when a young woman escaped after being largely confined to a tiny underground dungeon in a quiet Vienna suburb for more than eight years.

Natascha Kampusch was 10 years old when she was kidnapped in Vienna on her way to school in March 1998. Her abductor, Wolfgang Priklopil, threw himself in front of a train just hours after her dramatic escape.

These kinds of stories are so bizarre they are almost hard to believe.
The guy is 73 and has gotten away with it for most of his life. So what can be done to him to serve any justice?

I was reading this speechless that the mother couldn't figure it out. Seriously, if a partner says, "this area is offbounds - never come in".. then GO IN!!!

I'm amazed that the girl simply didn't overpower the father and force him to let her out - only takes one kitchen knife or a carefully constructed weapon to his throat. Seriously the dude doesn't look that hard to force down.

Truly horrific and one of the most sadistic of crimes.
This is when you wished they still had torture as punishment, but this guy looks twisted and no punishment to him will ever amount to what he has done here.

The mother cannot be that bloody stupid.. I find that hard to believe. Don't ever go in the basement.. but I'll be heading down for an hour or so.. don't wait up.. and oh yeah.. never go down there.

I'd bet there are many many more worse stories yet to be told out there.
Some things however, I just don't want to know about.

This whole story is extremely disturbing! Someone knew what was going on! I don't think we have heard everything and it is likely there will be more coming out on this 'story'! Just my 2 cents!

I have a pretty strong stomach when it comes to most things I read or find on the net, but this seriously made me want to throw up. I can't believe someone could do such a thing, especially to their own kid. It just sickens me!

I thought the same thing... But even torturing him to death in the most horrific way imaginable couldn't add to the pain he has caused his poor daughter over the last 20+ years. It's so sad :(

This is horrific. People ask why she didn't try to escape but if she had been down there since she was 11, she would have had no idea what the outside world would be like. I saw this movie once called Bad Boy Bubbie, about a similar circumstance (although thankfully it was quite fictional in the movie), where a single mother convinced her son that the air outside was poison and he could never leave. She was mean and abusive and when she would leave the house she'd put on a gas mask. The movie starts when the guy is 35 years old but because of the years of mental, physical and sexual abuse he is a seriously messed up person. Towards the beginning he kills his mom and her boyfriend and escapes and the movie is all about how he deals with the world around him. Absolutely horrifying and quite disturbing, yet a fascinating movie. But no, I do not recommend it unless you have a strong stomach. It does make me wonder about this man and his daughter, and how messed up she is after living in a cellar her whole life.

This is one of those stories to think about when you're having a bad week and you think life is really crappy.
