They're taking our big LCD television away today. We've only had this one for about 6 months and it's already acting up. What a crazy technologically disposable world we've become.

I have a rotary phone that my grand-parents got in the early sixties that works as well today as the day they brought it home.

Yep, things get litterally cheaper (in cost and materials) and more expensive on the environment. That Nat Geo article on technological waste was an eye opener.

I loved those rotary phones! Heavy as a brick! :)

You know what man...you are 100% correct

I bought two electrical things from Home Depot, and had to take them both back because they didnt work when I got home.

i also bought something that same day from Best Buy, had to take that back too...it didnt work either...

I believe Neil Young said it best: "It's a PIECE-OF-CRAP!" :D

Neil shall show us the way:)

Until recently I worked in an electronics store and I often thought that people should just give us some money and we'd pre-destroy everything, save a whole lot of trouble, since most things hardly worked to begin with. Don't forget to buy the extended warranty!

I always get the extended warranty for certain things.
You're basically buying a replacement item 3 years down the road.

Yeah, but it is a scam. Most people keep their electronics for a little over 3 years and by that time forget that they had the warranty in the first place, so they very rarely have to pay out for them.

Same concept for replacement parts. Had a digital camera, and broke the LCD. It was cheaper to buy a new camera, than replace the screen! :( Bought the extended warranty for the new camera! :)

Recently I had the door of my DVD writer break. The door! Just some moving plastic parts.
They told me to scrap it and buy a new one, that it would be cheaper that way. Fuckin incredible!

They design them that way. I sold cell phones and a lot of the popular ones are designed to last only 9 months, because research shows that demographic buys a new phone every 9 months anyway. Incredible. We've moved from planned obsolesence to just plain crap! Why make it good if all the consumer lunatics will just go buy a new one next year anyway? Grrr!

Yep! They want to charge you $25 for a 50 cent replacement piece. Or $35 for a whole new unit! :( They now you will just spend the extra $10 so you don't have to spend the time fixing it! It's just wrong!

Yup, we're getting screwed, no way around it:(

I have to agree. I have a DVD recorder here that my dad bought and he was gonna throw it in the garbage. So I told him don't throw it away I'll take it. So he brought it over and I really thought it was fine and he was just an old guy losing his patience with the technology.

Well it worked ok a few times for certain things but now it's starting to totally screw up.

So anyways he bought a new one, a Toshiba and he says it's working great.

The brands that I've great results from are JVC DVD player. I've had that for many years now. And Electrohome TV. Same thing been working for years.

I've found that extended warrenties are useless. It either breaks in the first year (standard warrenty) or by the time it does break you should buy something new anyway.

Exactly, that's why they're such a big money-maker for the company. The people who don't forget they have them, after 3 years don't use them. Or, my personal favourite, by the time you try to redeem the warrenty, they don't make it anymore or anything remotely like it. Nice:)

Most extended warranty's are useless....BUT the extended warranty is coming in mighty handy right now for my home air conditioner. Compressor died, so they are installing a new one tomorrow!! NO CHARGE!!! WOOOHOOO!!!

I'm seriously thinking of moving on a 10 acre land or something like that, continue work on my sites but spend more time doing real stuff like grow vegetables, have a few chickens and few pigs. Try to be as self sufficient as I could be.

You're perfectly right. That's how I got my new camcorder. I could see potential problems with my JVC camcorder in 2000 so I purchased the extended warranty. Had the head replaced a couple of times, then got a new Sony hard drive in 2007 cause they couldn''t fix the JVC anymore.

Growing your own food will be a big help when society collapses. Apparently this is happening sometime next week:P
