View Full Version : Webmasters - Are we living fast and dying young?

Considering some of the lifestyles of webmasters, do you think that many of us are on the fast track to dying young?

I had this conversation with a good friend of mine recently and I have to admit I see a lot of people in our biz who are living fast right now.

What are your thoughts?

It's nothing different than from what I do normally, although I seem to be a bit more free at the conventions . I am just thankful that there isn't a convention every week or else I would have to think things thru.

Not sure how many people have died yound due to living fast in this industry, so I can't really comment.

Life's short.. work hard...play harder.

I think attitudes change when you have kids though..

Live everyday like it's your last.. there is simply no other way to be (IMO) cuz.. "snap".. things can change in life in an instant.

i wuld say that i have been around alot..and i have never seen anyone party harder then our industry..it is crazy.

must be the money.

we will show up at clubs looking like we just got out of bed..but throw down the most.

i think it is almost ingrained that we should be that way as well.

i dont know i have fun....but i think eventually it is time to stop partying hard.

I am new to this industry, don't know many people. Cann't wait to meet some in either LA or Vegas.

Hey Chris! With a post like this it sounds like Vancouver was awesome.

My philosophy is...... It's better to burn out than fade away. Most people die at 25 years old....we just don't bury them until they're 65.

Since i miss all the parties and conventions... I wouldn't consider what I'm doing as "fast"

I didn't see anything at the Vancouver show that gave me the idea to start this thread. I just thought I would throw the question out there.

I've been doing these shows since May of 99, and I haven't missed any of the big ones save the last show in Miami at the Diplomat. It's hard to recall a specific Vegas show now, as they all seem to blend in to one another.

Here's a thought...

Suppose they weren't in the porn industry? Suppose they had another skill, source of income, talent..., that allowed them the same or better financial income porn has given them. Would some people still party hard and live life in the fast lane?

My thoughts would be that they would.

These people do not have to be movie stars, trust fund babies, rock stars, pornographers, smut peddlers, pimps, engineers, inventors, stock brokers... These people can just be an average factory worker who earns $20.00 USD an hour or more who just decides to spend their money on partying, women or men, gambling, clubs, booze, and drugs...

If it's in their nature to want to participate in the "life in the fast lane" lifestyle, they will find the means to fund their lifestyle.

There's nothing wrong with it. This is just who some people are.

personally speaking mate, I know I go a bit crazy at the smaller shows. But that only counts for about 15 days of the year for me.

The other 350 days are totally "wild crazy wierd free" times ;-)

we all have two lives being in this industry. some people we tell what we do, and some we dont. so when we meet a group of like minded people, its hard not to blow out and celebrate.

Again, great finally meeting you your evilness. look forward to a more sober meeting next time tho

Pornographers have a reputation to live up to. I'm not much of a partier, but it does seem to come with the job.

Echoing Evil Dan's statements... :) Are you back home now?

NetRodent, I'm not sure I agree that we have reputations to live up to and I certainly don't consider myself a pornographer. However yes, there seems to be a propensity for those of us in the business to somewhat be party animals at times.

This year I have been shocked at the number of suicides in this industry, I know of 3 and one was a very close personal friend of 10 years. I think the isolation of working on a computer 12 hours a day many of us lose touch with how our lives actually affect one another...and shows are built up to "live up" to some image we carry online but is it who we really are? How much personal satisfaction does one get in life from programming scripts or pushing porn in the long term? After 5 years do most of us still find meaning and satisfaction?... Makes me wonder and full of concern for the mental and physical health of all of us. Yeah working at home is great, but with 6 months between shows one can get lonely with ascii emotions and emoticons...

Ya we do party hard when we get together .. I think it's only cus the time we all spend apart, knowing what eachother is doing everyday .. and then finnally meeting up in a strange city where we are all together in the hundreds ... However I have found that there are always a few webmasters that look out for you .. With that said .. I want to Thank everybody that looked out for me on Saturday night .. and especially to my Guarian Angel FNP Jen ....

Let's just make sure we see eachother again in vegas with high spirits and full pockets

I know I could not keep up in Vancouver
I used to party large before getting into the industry
I think party people are drawn to the industry

We can always put something together just to get you up here ... What will it take? A guest bartending spot at the Triple X erotic Lounge?
