are we allowed to force user to click in a link to get access to to the password field to get access to our 'member area' on our free sites?

That would depend on your sponsors. Sounds kind of underhanded to me. Surfers are easily agitated these days as it is.

I know that most AVS's don't even allow for a lead-in that forces the signup page.

What I mean by that is having a text story that builds up to the steamy bits, then has a <more> link that dumps you to the signup page.

They are getting militant about "blind" links.
