New Oxymoron: Facebook Friends

I read this short letter in the Montreal Gazette over the weekend, and thought I would share. This also applies to MySpace.

New Oxymoron: Facebook Friends
(written by Alexia Y)

Most of my friends are avid Facebook users who scrounge for as many "friends" as possible. This is purely for narcissistic pleasure. Their friends list symbolizes their "popularity".
"I saw that person cross the street, I'll add him," or "This is my classmate's second cousin, I'll add him" - that's what constitutes "friends" these days.
There's even something called a "random add" that allows strangers to go through your list of buddies and add random people to their own friends list. The horror is that these naive people accept the friend request and allow these strangers to see their complete profile, including pictures, personal events, and information.
The truth is that most people hardly ever interact with the acquaintances on their Facebook list. They're interested only in getting as many names as they can to prove their growing superficial popularity. Yes, friends indeed.

Everyone is a "Social Media" expert these days too, which is funny since an expert is considered someone with 10 years experience in a given field.

Hehehehe damn right ;-)

I have over 10k friends on inkednation :scram:

lulu 03-09-2009 11:15 AM

too true. i like to see what my friends are doing out West. but what kills me is that people don't play around with the privacy settings so that only your friends you've chosen can see your pics or not even if you don't want them too. i just did a clean up of my facebook. i had to remove lots of peeps in the biz. i have nieces and nephews who are at the surfing age.

DrChango 03-09-2009 01:15 PM

I got back into contact with a lot of old friends from high school thanks to facebook, but the apps and everything on there annoy the ever-living crap out of me.
I don't get people with four hundred friends on there, that's just ridiculous.

tom doesn't have facebook LOL

I use to include alot of people on mine, but after a while when family saw it, they wondered why so many models were adding me. Now its just industry and close friends, though industry are alot of hot girls anyways LOL> I like to keep the list short myself

I find that even on AWW I get added by people I don't know at all. But what am I to do? Refuse them and look like a jerk? :)

I add them anyway....

DrChango 03-09-2009 03:23 PM

I think I sent you a friend request on AWW;)

LizAEBN 03-09-2009 04:14 PM

I actually interact with most of the people on my FB pretty regularly through IM or email on the site, and have my privacy settings filtered for outside searches as much as possible.

Between old friends from growing up, college, and work, it is a sizeable list. But i is actually all people I know and talk with regularly.

Vid Vicious 03-09-2009 05:24 PM

I completely dis agree .. in the past month I've met at least a dozen of my facebook freinds .. if not more ... I attend events and even agree to meet some of them in private .. so far facebook has brought me lots of business and contacts, including models male and female, event co-ordinators .. I'm even joining an organization purely because of facebook which should bring me lots of work and models; montreal Fetish weekend

SykkBoy 03-09-2009 06:31 PM

I keep facebook for people I grew up with, non-industry people I know (with a few exceptions), friends, family, etc. and I keep myspace more for band updates, industry people a little bit, and people I know.

Cyndalie 03-10-2009 10:53 AM

I know everyone on my facebook. Myspace got a little crazy but I only added bands other than people I actually knew.

DrChango 03-10-2009 11:40 AM

problem with bands is that they spam the hell out of myspace's bulletin feature, to the point where I routinely miss bulletins posted by my RL friends.

Popularity comes at a price

dyonisus 03-10-2009 07:23 PM

facebook is for friends, I have met every person on there at least once.
I never got the more then X number of friends. I have 120 FB friends and that caught me off guard. on Myspace it is more but I use that to network in the action sports industry for my website slidingglass.com

I see my twitter updates looking something like this:

Jacob is:

-masturbating
-playing Warhammer: Age of Reckoning
-reading a sci-fi novel
-masturbating
-doing laundry
-masturbating
-practicing kung fu in the garage
-masturbating
-masturbating
-reading a fantasy novel
-getting conned into yard work by his mother
-playing WAR
-masturbating

maybe it is best that I don't use Twitter...or get a girlfriend...

DrChango 03-16-2009 01:59 PM

one of the perks to having access to free porn, lol

sharphead 03-17-2009 02:50 AM

Facebook is just an address book for me.. Anyone who sends me invites just gets ignored anyways.

Quagmire 03-17-2009 08:20 AM

I check Facebook out now and then to see if anyone I used to hang out with has added me, but generally speaking I don't use the social networking sites. I haven't been in my Myspace account in months, and Twitter I use purely as a porn work tool to announce stupidity and post some URLs.

I think I have around 100 friends on facebook including people I went to school with and some of my wife's friends who added me (woo, hawt!) and less than 50 on myspace.

Jayvis 03-17-2009 11:50 AM

My friend mentioned this the other day and it couldn't be more true.

People You May Know = People You Probably Hate.

Kenny B 03-17-2009 12:28 PM

I find it a complete invasion of privacy and refuse to use facebook. I see the advantages for business but would never have one for my personal life

NicAngel 03-17-2009 04:17 PM

who cares. let people use it however they want.

Itchy 03-19-2009 06:56 PM

Ok so theres one more you got to get on now :)

I ran into a cousin from back east a few years ago who is one of the few gay cousins I have. We had been out of touch with my living in LA and I thought it would be nice to get back in touch, so I asked if he was on MySpace. He had just created an account so I told him to add me. Since I didn't use my name on MySpace I was pretty free to have all sorts of things on it, pics of me in leather at the pride parade, pics of me cavorting with our models at events, blog entries about what bdsm means to me and all the stuff that my friends already know about me. Imagine my chagrin when I decided to see what my cousin had in his MySpace page when I saw the only "friends" he had were myself, his little sister (okay, 20 is not so little but you know what I mean) and his FATHER!

The irony is that now that I'm on Facebook I have my real name and a mixture of my friends from the adult industry, my friends from the leather scene, other local friends, college friends and even one person from my high school. I never really thought these various areas of my life would converge but here you have it. I promised myself a long time ago that I would live my life open, free and without shame, but I never thought I was going to map it out quite so easily for everyone involved. LOL!

DrChango 03-20-2009 05:49 PM

I have some very religious friends and family, which makes this album on my myspace page all the more f'd up:
http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/inde...lbumId=2576890

note the title of the album

sharphead 03-23-2009 02:39 AM

I only use Facebook just so people can contact me in RL if they are looking for me... if it wasn't for that.. i'd shut it all down. Useless to me for the most part.
