Anyone here play Everquest?

I've never played the game myself but I cannot even believe how big this Everquest things is getting!!

Does anyone else play this game or participate in other online gaming communities similar to Everquest?

wsjb78 12-04-2002 01:13 PM

I play reguarly Diablo 2 - LoD on HC mode... played a few times with Twinkley on the European BNet Servers!

At one of the college research institutes a friend of mine plays a lot Dark Ages of Camelot... he likes it a lot.

luke 12-04-2002 01:21 PM

I had a guy that worked here that was a freak and played Everquest all night long. From what his brother told me, he quit here to play it full time to build up characters and sell them. I thought that was pretty rediculous but to each his own I guess. I don't have time to play games like that, maybe a game on the xbox here or there but nothing that takes forever to play....too much work to do!

Juge 12-04-2002 03:12 PM

luke, I heard about shit like that, too. It's crazy.

I have never played the game myself, but I remember a long time ago thinking about how cool it would be to have a massively multi-player game in real time, and everquest is it... so maybe I should join. it's a wicked concept.

I like to call it EverCrack. Once you get into it, it is just as bad of an addiction :)

I played for a few months when it came out, finished someone in the mid 20 level. The game has totally changed now. There is a whole system of economics and community there.

I was just going to say in the gaming community it is called EverCrack.

I play online games but mostly military FPS' like Battlefield 1942.

Buran LOVES battlefield 1942 - he plays it nightly.

I am hooked on diablo myself. Everquest was one of the first games i tried, but couldnt get into it cause i couldnt figure out how to play! No one would help me or even talk to me on the game so I was like fuck it.

wsjb78 12-04-2002 04:52 PM

Twinkley, when will we play again together?

Slick 12-04-2002 04:57 PM

Heck, I was hooked on Everquest for over a year and a half, once you get going with it, you get REALLY hooked, that's all that I thought about doing, I even went on Ebay and paid real money for items, he he he.

I haven't played it in a couple of months now, but am getting the bug to jump back into it again.

What gets me is that the game is sooooo damn repetative, you find an area that fits your level, join a group, fight monsters for a couple of weeks while you gain a few levels, then move onto the next area and do the same thing all over again. AND in the battles, if you're a fighter or TANK is the term, you stand up, beat on the monster until it's dead, then sit and wait until the puller for the group, brings in the next monster.

Then if you're a magic caster like healer or mage, you stand up, heal people or cast hurt spells, then sit down and meditate, then stand up again, cast more spells, sit down and meditate, and so on.

HOWEVER, even though it seems repetative, it's addicting as hell once you start playing it. On the Morell Thule server, I have a level 45 Barbarian Warrior and a level 35 High Elf Cleric.

I'd have to say of all of the games that I've ever played in my life, Everquest has to be the game that I've played the most.

Juge 12-05-2002 08:03 AM

Wow Slick, that's nuts. If it's that repetitive, I can't see how it can be that addictive. I like RPGs, and I know they can be repetitive at times, and everquest just sounds like a more repetitive glorified RPG, so it seems like it would be very annoying when all you want to do is increase your level.

Again, I'll have to say the civilization was the most addictive game I have ever played. You are constantly upgrading all the time, it's not so slow like an RPG. There is always something new to do, and the game is constantly changing as you go through time and advance. It's always different, and it's so damn non-repetitive and addictive that as soon as you're done one game (which takes forever) you want to start again becaues it's totally different the next time. Also, regardless of your skill at the game, it's easy to play. You can get into it deep with changing governments and strategies, or you can play it right away after 1 minutes of watching someone else play and forget about all that stuff. It's the first game I ever seen that anyone can play at some many different levels (and I don't mean difficult levels - I mean the exact same game). That Sid Meier guy who designed it is a genious... I need to find civ3 again so I can play it. I don't think the old civ1 works well on today's computers...

twinkley 12-05-2002 11:14 AM

WSJB,

You play HC and I just cant get over dying and losing my stuff over and over again - so annoying!

twinkley

wsjb78 12-05-2002 11:26 AM

I can't really get over it also... but I still start from the beginning again... :)

Or wanna play some SC? I could open up an account on US East.

twinkley 12-05-2002 11:31 AM

I'll make you a deal - you open an SC in US East and I will open another HC in Europe and we can switch back and forth playing :)

wsjb78 12-05-2002 12:34 PM

Sounds good! :)

Juge 12-05-2002 12:48 PM

What does it cost to play everquest? Is there some kind of monthly fee for access, and a flat fee for the game itself?

twinkley 12-05-2002 01:22 PM

It's like $10 for the game and $10/mo to play....

twinkley

pornJester 12-05-2002 02:47 PM

No time for games unfortunately, I have warcraft 3 sitting here for the past 2 months and have yet to install it ;-P

Wow, that's not bad at all. And it's good for them, especially when its addictiveness is being compared to crack...

HeadPimp 12-05-2002 04:03 PM

DAmn game is addicting.. I play once or twice a week, but limit myself to that. The whole concept that people pay real money for electronic comoddities is rather mind boggling...

Slick 12-05-2002 09:52 PM

Actually, Everquest's price got raised up to $12.95 per month now I believe.

As far as the cost of the game, you can buy the standard Everquest release for $10 which will get ya going and if you get into the game, you can pick up the expansion packs to gain new lands.

"The Shadows Of Luclin" might be something that you'd wanna get with the game, but it sells for $30, BUT what it does is gives you a lot more areas to cover, but more importantly, it upgrades all of the character models in the game, which makes everything look sooo much better.

As far as my comments on the game being repetative, it's a tough thing, even though it's repetative, it's still fun interacting with other people and traveling around. The size of the world is just amazing. I know that I'll just take time to visit different areas just to see them. I've been around a lot in the game, but I'd say that I've only been on a small portion of the zones that are in the game.

I'm kinda saddened by the "Planes of Power" expansion pack though, how they let you teleport around in the game. Sure, it's nice being able to do that, but I think that traveling around, waiting for those damn boats to come in and sitting on them forever made the game fun because you were venturing over, now it's just too easy.

Anyways, I'm gonna get going, all of this Everquest talk is making me wanna play it, ha ha ha.

Yeah, that is pretty mind boggling how people make a living from it. When things were sold on Ebay, prices were really high and money for them must've been good, but Sony got pissed off and made Ebay ban Everquest item and character sales, but there's still other places out there like http://www.playerauctions.com that sell online items, but the profitability isn't as high partially because of the expansion packs, which changed a few things, like the bazaar setup for selling things in the game, plus the addition of new items, drove down prices.

I know that when I was at my peak of the game, I was out buying things from Ebay, I spent a few bucks over there twinking out one of my characters, he he he.

I am afraid that if I start gaming it will affect my life.

That's the problem with these games... People don't realize that they are already in a game way more complicated with way better rewards for 'winning' called LIFE :) When you think about it, it's too bad people weren't as excited to wake up every morning and take part in the most amazing game you'll ever play... Besides playing video games takes time away from the game that matters more. It's funny how things work, I guess...

Slick 12-06-2002 10:04 AM

I guess that gaming all depends on how much you allocate your time to. I know that there's times where I'll spend a good couple of weeks just taking basic care of my websites, then hooking up and gaming for hours and hours, but there's also times that I'll sit here and I'll work for weeks straight without even touching a game.

Sure, working on sites is making money, but if that's all that you do, you'll eventually get burned out on it, that's why I like games because it gives a little break from the usual.

Juge, you could always join a professional gaming league and get payed to play if you're good enough, he he he.

Juge 12-06-2002 10:31 AM

Slick,

I must agree that taking breaks is very important. I like games as much as the next guy. It's just that these games that imitate real life are rather amusing to me...

Nice avatar, btw!! ha ha :)

Good points by the both of you, however for me I live in San Diego and I am an outdoorsy type of person. So, when I am not in front of the screen I am surfing, playing golf, or soccer. So, my fear is that it will affect these hobbies of mine.

twinkley 12-06-2002 10:52 AM

Uh-huh

And lets not forget about all the fun indoor sports we can play too hehehehe

Yup, if it becomes your hobby, which they very well could, then all of a sudden you have no time for any hobbies that actually keep you healthy, and that's no good... I figure I spend enough time in front of this thing as is...

Danny_C 12-08-2002 02:31 PM

I played EQ for a bit when it was in beta, and then a bit when it first came out. It was fun when it was new, but got boring fast. I tried again when the first expansion came out, but couldn't really get into it.

Now, I might have to check out World of Warcraft when it comes out. They seem to be putting a lot of effort into making a MMORPG that doesn't take most of your time to play... and I really trust Blizzard to make some really fun games.

Juge 12-08-2002 02:42 PM

The game that was most addicitive to me besides for civ1 was probably Dune 2 - I don't know if it was the first reattime strategy game or not (I think it was), but it was SOOO addictive. It's just another one of those games that doesn't seem to ever end, so you can play it forever. I havent really played any of the newer RTS games, so I imagine that they are way better...
