Why do we talk "funny" to our pets and kids??

I know I do.. I usually "put on" some high pitch version of my voice when Im talking my (or anyone elses) pets.. I bet if I would have someone record what Im saying and how im saying it... I would end up sounding like one crazy mofo.. ;-)

dont have any kids.. but.. EACH and EVERYONE of my friends talk the same way with their kids..

On my way to the gym today I cross paths with 3 diffirent women, talking "funny" (high or low pitch voices and funny words) with their kids...

why do we do this? hehe.. any studies on this "phenomena"?

i do.

i do it to my nieces & nephews, and to my dogs.

it's some kind of baby talking them to get their attention & to project that it's fun or play time. i enjoy doing it cuz it relaxes me. it's fun to look idiot at times LOL :bonk:

i do too....its like talking to a baby that they'll understand that you are not angry to them and its a way to get you closer to them;)

I don't think most people who do that don't really intend to distort their voices, it so happened that subconciously they tend to follow the youngsters voice.

Of course I do that. LOL
I think maybe we do it instinctively as that change of voice is indicative of love and encouragement.

Well, I do that as well and I think the kids and I can relate each other more that way.

but it's not advicable to talk to them that way as they grow older. they might think that, that is the correct manner of speaking...

 Yup guilty!!! I'm sure it annoys the hell out of them (kids & pets) Ryan is 2 and I still do it, something tells me I'll still be doing it when he's 20 and taller than me! ::-|
