I had read that article as well, found it on another board.

Basically, it's a long drawn out patent that they claim that have of data transimissions over the net, for video and audio.

What the article fails to mention is that the company claims to have had it since 1990, which it did... but some other dying fast company bought that company just recently (passed few years) just to lay claim to that patent and threaten to start charging everyone for lots of $$.

What it also fails to mention is that the company sent out brochures to all major porn companies (including us at MaskTV) claiming all these patents, and proceeded to list all these companies and forms of transmission.... but never once mentioned Apple, Microsoft or RealOne. Meaning, well... duh... they have no claim to our stuff. They also went on to mention NASA and many other mainstream companies having nothing to do with porn.

Long story short.... it's all smoke and mirrors. It's been there for ever, will be there for ever, will never amount anything and will never cost us a penny.

Nothing to worry about :D

When you read the actual patents, they are vague and too generalized.

Acacia figures if they actually win a suit agaisnt the porn industry, which they believe they can win over juries because people have negative preconceived ideas about the porn industry, then they will then have the money to go after the big boys like AOL Time Warner, Disney, CNN...

What the common person fails to realize, if Acacia does succeed, this affects all forms of media transmission. Everyone from Disney, Apple, Microsoft, Motion Picture Association, Fox, CNN, Sony, Panasonic, AT&T, Bell Telephone... would be affected. Fees for services would rise to cover the cost of licensing fees. You would pay more for a movie ticket for the privaledge to watch in a theater. Your internet connection fees, cable tv, satellite fees would all rise, for starters.
