I've heard people say that 'America's Got Talent' is the modern day gong show.

I liked the old gong show better.

student4ever 06-25-2007 12:53 PM

for Summer TV, it's been renamed - America's Got Talent (or not...)

if you haven't seen Boy Shakira... well... you haven't missed much... LOL

TheLegacy 06-25-2007 12:54 PM

prefer the old one as well - the celebrity guest hosts were better comics and quite honestly - you loved comics more back in the old days.

student4ever 06-25-2007 01:02 PM

oh come on Rob, you actually want your comics to be funny or something? It amazes me how many comics of today think it's all about telling a joke with a great punchline.

really showing my age here, but this is a classic bit of humor

I also loved the way the audience got into the Gong Show. Like when they would clap their hands in anticipation of Chuck Barris clapping his hands, which apparently was a nervous action he couldn't seem to shake, so he just made it a part of the show.

Really I didn't know that.

Yeah ok it's funny, you're right Chris! :laughout: He has been talking about it for weeks!

I remember coming home from school, and watching the Gong Show every day. It was on during the supper hour I think. Even back then I thought it was a total scream. :)

There's a great book called Queen of the Oddballswhich is the memoirs of Hilary Carlip, a young woman who grew up in Hollywood, stalked Carly Simon, won the Gong Show, was an extra in Xanadu, and created her own punk band called Angel & The Reruns who had the cult hit "Beaver Cleaver Fever". Her chapter about the Gong Show brings back a flood of memories.

Have you guys ever seen Confessions of a Dangerous Mind? If you are a fan of the Gong Show you'll need to see this. Chuck Barris and international hit man? Wow!
