Swedish wrestler Ara Abrahamian threw down his greco-roman bronze medal in protest on Thursday after his bid for Olympic gold was ended by a decision denounced by the Swedish coach as “politics.”

Abrahamian took the bronze from around his neck during the medal ceremony, stepped from the podium and dropped it in the middle of the wrestling mat then walked off.

“I don’t care about this medal. I wanted gold,” he said.

A bitter Abrahamian, silver medalist at Athens 2004 who had high hopes of top honors in the 84kg competition in Beijing, announced he was quitting the sport.

“This will be my last match. I wanted to take gold, so I consider this Olympics a failure,” he said

It's unfortunate. Apparently one of the judges made a really bad call which cost him the gold. One of those things that everyone knew who the best should have been but for the judge's mistake.

Yep Chris is right, he's not a sore loser, the judge made a very bad call. If I was the CIO I would give him a honorary gold.

That guy also won Silver at Athens.

He was "officially" stripped of his medal as well.

This is a problem in Olympic competition. If a judge messes up, the athlete generally has zero re-course in most cases.

oh that sucks, I didn't know that.
what a shame!

Definately unfortunate, although he probably could have handled it a little better!

NicAngel 08-19-2008 05:38 PM

That has to hurt.

That's what I was going to say also. Maybe a little bit of tact may have gotten his point across much better?
