Grilled tofu, anyone?

I was in a playful mood for lunch today and I decided to wrap firm tofu that I bought from the supermarket with Canadian bacon and beef fat. With a little bit of fresh rosemary and thyme, I grilled those babies for five to six minutes in a hibachi. Tastiest tofu I've ever eaten.

doesn't that defeat the purpose of tofu?

BigBrownKablooey 05-27-2009 06:13 PM

Yes Jacob, but it's sooo good with wasabe and mayo.

Now I'm hungry!

What's with the bacon thing lately??!? This isn't the first place I see bacon madness... what's up with that?

:D

The bacon seasons the tofu as the beef fat goodness adds the umami taste.

Mmmmm.....I love tofu...but it depends on how its cooked.

I grill tofu all the time, I marinate it in a bit of Teriyaki sauce, since it soaks up any flavor you toss at it, then grill or bake it as is, love it!

Magnus3x, add a tablespoon each of A1, chili oil and Hoisin sauce into your Teriyaki sauce (good for 1 kg of firm tofu) and believe me, you will love eating tofu with a steaming bowl of rice.

beef fat in bacon?

BigBrownKablooey 06-04-2009 09:57 AM

Chris, the beef fat helps enrich the taste of the tofu. The bacon seasons it. BTW, I forgot to mention that you should blanche the tofu first for two to three minutes in simmering water. That way when you grill the tofu, it holds its shape and not crumble to a sorry mess.

I totally enjoy grilled tofu. I tend to not include any meat products when I eat tofu. I agree it does defeat the purpose of consuming the tofu.

I do my tofu in whatever flavour I am feeling. I did a pineapple fire roasted grilled tofu last night. It was originally a porkchop recipe I made vegetarian. Tasty as can be!

I tried marinating tofu with anchovies, a dash of that Japanese chili powder, and some cream. When I grilled it, it had an amazingly fruity smell. Must be from that chili powder.

Next up, grilled tofu salad with sliced green apples and morcilla that my grandmother sent me.
