Northern Lights

It would appear that the world's northern hemisphere is experiencing massive amounts of northern light activity right now...

All of these pics were taken in the last 24 hours.

I live in Montreal, which is usually a bit too far south to see much Auroral activity, but last night we got a nice show right off our back deck.

Kinda like this.....

Maybe it has something to do with the recent ozone depletion.

The magnetic poles are shifting... thus, so is the planet... a bit. This causes the light show to shift as well, since it's kinda reflecting in on us from the North.

They say that the magnetic north pole will leave Canada very soon actually!! Here is a blurb from some scientists...

"At its current velocity, Mag North will move out of Canada's waters by 2005, and if it continues on its present path, it will be just off the coast of Siberia in about 50 years."

This is as it stands now... however, it tends to shift constantly... and is always "wobbly" which is why it's been stuck within Canadian borders for the past 400 years.

Anyway, that's my science lesson for today.. enjoy :D

Funbrunette 10-02-2002 07:00 PM

Well, Chris & I will be watching out for it tonight! :D Maybe even try to get a few pics!

That's an interesting article, PD... however I don't think that northern lights have much to do with the depletion of the earth's ozone layer. More to do with solar flares on the sun, and sunspots.

We get some really fantastic light shows here in the winter, they actually started around the first week of august, which is about a month to early,
Ill see if i can get that digital cam of mine to get pics of it, if not I have a night mode on my digital mini-dv cam

erika 10-03-2002 03:19 AM

If you go to the 10th one down, youll see how bright they are here, that is taken here in edmonton.

Beautifal celestial light show Chris:D

I remember when I was about 8 seeing the Southern Lights and being by myself at the time, my overactive childhood imagination decided we were being invaded and I ran all the way home. lmao:happy:

Southern lights huh? Now that's something I hadn't heard of. I'm going to look that up. Do you know of any sites with nice pics?
We couldn't see anything here last night as it was overcast and raining. But from what I have been reading, the lightshow won't be letting up for at least a month.

Tafkap 10-03-2002 09:37 AM

My parents are from Finland and my mom says the Northern Lights were always beautiful to see.. I've never seen them myself.

The pics are beautiful !!

Kind of like last year when the sky was full of meteor showers.. that was pretty to see.. so many "falling stars"

:)

Evil Chris 10-03-2002 10:33 PM

It's a gorgeous clear evening here tonight... but no light-show...
Oh well....

Stuart... You're starting to make a believer (or non-believer) out of me with that URL.

I HATE IE6.0 sometimes!!!

Does anyone know how to make it STOP resizing pictures to the window? Anything with text becomes totally unreadable, even in full screen mode!

twinkley

Evil Chris 10-04-2002 10:28 AM

Twinkley...

Tools> Internet Options> Advanced> Multimedia> Enable Automatic Image Re-sizing

Just un-check that box...

twinkley 10-04-2002 12:09 PM

Chris,

I *knew* there was a reason you were my hero!!

Thanks!!
