Who is old enough to remember... ?

Red Barn Restaurants?

When I was a little kid (around 4 years to 7 years old) it used to be my favourite place for a hamburger, and I even had my 4th or 5th birthday there, similar to how kids have their birthdays at McDonalds nowadays.

Check out this great link: http://www.barnbuster.net/

Sheri Santiago 10-30-2004 01:19 PM

Is that only in Canada? Never heard of it.

Evil Chris 10-30-2004 01:22 PM

Not only in Canada, but only in 19 states in the US.

The chain started in the early 60's in Dayton, OH by a man named Harry Barmier, it was called The Red Barn System. It was sold in the late 60's to a company called Servomation (food vending) and became Red Barn Restaurants Inc.

After many successful years, The Red Barn chain was sold again in the late 70s, this time to Motel 6. Over time with little or no advertising, leases ran out and the restaurants closed. In its 20+ year run, the Red Barn operated in 19 states and Canada.

Panky 10-30-2004 01:38 PM

I never heard of it either.

Don Soporno 10-30-2004 01:47 PM

wow, that place definatly has some history. Wonder why the hell it was sold to Motel 6 though, kinda a stupid move. Did they really think simply leaving the light on would keep the place going?

RugFarm Traffic 10-30-2004 01:53 PM

I don't remember that one, but I did go to Fudruckers all the time when I was younger, there was one in Victoria, Edmonton and Calgary I think.

They had the best burgers ever, it was my saturday treat from my dad. :)

There's one near my parents place in Pennsylvania. Very popular, active restaurant. Right in the heart of the tourist area.

facialfreak 10-31-2004 06:51 AM

And A&W where girls on rollerskates brought your food on a tray to your car!

OK I think I just sprouted 30 more grey hairs now :(

Ponderosa used to be everywhere when I was a kid. I never see them anymore, though.

LAJ 10-31-2004 02:37 PM

I remember em Chris... had totally forgotten until you brought it up!

Seth 10-31-2004 11:10 PM

We still have several ponderosa's around NE Ohio... go there once in a while to get a couple of the 25 'wingettes' boxes for get togethers

2257Auditor 11-01-2004 03:57 PM

I still remember ....
when the Harvey's on Bedford Road had stools, sold hash burgers and spanish flys at lunch.
One of the orginal counter boys has been the manager there for years

Vendzilla 11-01-2004 10:42 PM

Fudruckers and A&W were great when I was a kid, but the best place to go to in LA is Tommy's, they make a chili burger that taste great at 3am after the bars close!

Rinaldo 11-03-2004 03:55 PM

I love Fudruckers... fav hamburger plane in Miami

splatshed 11-03-2004 05:25 PM

nanda 11-03-2004 10:59 PM

TheLegacy 11-04-2004 09:49 AM

how about HSalt Fish and Chips - or drive in A&W's - even Ponderosa!!

Hell I remember going to my first McDonalds thinking, "who would want to buy a hamburger that is premade and you cant get what you want on it??" I under estimated the americans once again.

I don't remember the first 2 but I used to love A&W! We didn't have one near us growing up, but everytime we went to see my family in Canada we had to go there!!

twinkley 11-05-2004 01:49 PM

There is a semi-brand-new (maybe 2 years old now?) A&W right up the road ... they are part of pepsi-co now I believe, as they share a building with KFC. Loooove A&W!!

Fudruckers ... ugh, one of these closed down the road after many many health code violations ... place was nasty dirty.
