				Webmaster's screen resolution

In considering some slight re-designs to xnations, the question of resolution always comes up. Do we really need to design for 800x600 anymore? I would think that the base resolution now would have to be 1024x768... but I'd like to know what page everyone else is on here.

1024x768... only cause my monitor is just 15 inches.
At the office I have a 19 inch, so use 1600x1200

Hi there Chris, how are ya mate?
Well, my advice would be to make it 1024x768. Sometimes you just gotta push the limits a little bit, else we would get stuck forever.

I came across that issue when we were developing dickmans design v2, and we only made a 800x600 version because it is only a resize of the same SWF file.
Take care bro!

I have been pondering this for a while, the last few stats that I have seen have shown that most people are at least 1024x768. So I would imagine that most webmasters are on the upper end of that.

How long after the 50-60% mark do you think you need to still make sites fit in 800x600?

Well, I think the thing is... most surfers might still use 800x600, but most webmasters probably use 1024x768 now.

At least, most of the time. I know some who still have 800x600 on an old computer, or go to that res just to check their designs... but most use 1024x768 by default now, I'd assume.

This is what I was thinking also.
The thing is that the top menu buttons are maxed out if you're viewing at 800x600, but there is more that I would put on the main menu if I had the room for it without creating a 2nd row which I don't think I want to do.

Unless I read otherwise, I think it's probably the best to design webmaster related sites to 1024x768.

I think it's pretty much a given that anyone that has much to do with any kind of site design is going to be using at least 1024x768. And those of us that are strictly sales , etc. still tend to have better quality equipment than the average surfer. Out of 7 monitors around here only one is a 15 inch. All the rest are at least 17. And even the 15 inch is running at 1024x768. The only box that isn't running at 1024x768 is running at 1280x1024 or maybe even bigger.

When it comes to designing for the surfers though I would never design a site that isn't 800x600 friendly! Anytime you check your stats 1024 and 800 usuers are running at about 45% each. Most of the other 10% are in higher resolutions than 1024 but there are actually a few 640x480 surfers out there.

It's worth remembering that windows XP defaults to only 800x600. With 98/95 it was only 640x480. And there are a significant number of surfers that don't even have a clue how to change that I think.

I design everything for 800x600. Even though most webmasters may have higher resolutions you still should cater to those that don't.

btw my computer is at 1280x1024
