Of course you weren't with your car too, because that would have been unsafe in that weather. I think if you call the police, they can tell you what recourse you have against the tower.

well if I rememebr correctly, read a while back that TECHNICALLY they can't keep your car. You can go take it, they can accuse you for getting it. For trespassing yes. That they can do
And as for towing on the Highway, CAA should have told you that on highways... certain towing companies have the right to tow only. No matter what you say. It's a deal struck up with the gov't or something. So no matter if CAA is coming up and gonna tow your car, the driver would have to tell you he can't. He doesn't have a right on the highway.
The driver/company would get fined if caught. And probably an argument with the towing copany responsible for that section of the highway
But best way is to call and talk with the cop station (i presume SQ in dorval) and talk with them. See what you can do. The towing copanies are all scam artists. Trust me.. know few people who do it and my mechanic has told me many stories.
Anotehr example is many towing companies have scanners so when you call a company and you not member of CAA or whatever, many will run to your car and start towing it. No matter if not the one you called.
That's why when you are part of one, always check to see if they are. They shouldn't ask for any $$$ at all. Just your membership #.
